Generation Shoot

How often do we find mom in front of the camera? I encourage my muses to consider inviting their mother or father to be a part of their portrait session. You never know the next time you’ll all be together and what you have for memories when everyone continues to get older.

I had the pleasure of shooting with this amazing little family. Brooke reached out wanting to do something memorable while her daughter was still teeny - 3 months to be exact! I encouraged her to consider bringing in her mother as well. Here are some snippets from that day.

Behind The Scenes: Designer & Mother Betsy Cohen

We loved working with beautiful, Peruvian designer, Betsy Cohen. She is a new mother and the founder of Zophia, an online store for custom CEO skirts and business attire for women. Her attention to detail and taste for quality material, made it easy to choose from one of her custom made pieces for the shoot - her wedding gown!

We really enjoyed working with Betsy and we were all ready to make her feel like a princess for the afternoon. She shared with us that she didn’t even remember the last time that she had looked in the mirror ever since her little boy was born. Leslie, our joy-filled makeup artist, was thrilled to pamper her and dust her eyes with beautiful browns and golds to compliment her gown for the shoot, but not be too distracting from Betsy’s natural skin tones.

& After

We designed a lid that was simple, yet moody, bringing out the warmth in Betsy’s skin. Leslie added false lashes so that they would be more pronounced and dramatic in the shots we were about to take.

Mae was our assistant for the day and her love and energy is contagious, just like Leslie’s. It’s so easy to be in their presence. They make you feel as though you’ve been best friends for years. Their enthusiasm and excitement of the shoot permeated the studio. It didn’t take long for “tired & exhausted” Betsy to morph into the powerful, resilient woman she is. It shined in her photos and we were screaming and jumping with happiness as her glow was shining through the camera screen!

The backdrop we used was hand painted by me over a course of 3 days. I wanted to have something that wasn’t overpowering her gown, but complimented both her skin and the golds that were embroidered in her wedding dress. We reused her veil like a neck scarf which we had both girls toss and wave through a fan to give her a whimsical, ballerina vibe in her main shot. We laughed and danced to Rhianna on the playlist while clinking our glasses filled with sparkling cider.

Things to Know When Booking a Portrait Session with Your Baby

Michelle and her new daughter, Sam, are breathtaking! Despite how beautiful these two are, there is a lot of time, patience, and meltdowns that happen in order to get the winning shot.

Our lovely make-up artist, Leslie, took the time to prep momma while baby Sam was held by her husband in the other room. It didn’t last too long! She was brought back wailing with a confused father, not knowing how to console her after trying “everything.” Thankfully, momma new the trick and she managed to show a small video that helps babies calm down. Click the link if you have a fussy baby too!

However, if your baby is being grumpy know that he or she is in control for the most part. It’s important to know that when they have had enough that they get the upper hand and need to rest or be bounced around the room till they calm down. We will not push them. If they are calling time out, we’ll honor that break needed. We are an all female staff and have a couch in the studio where you and your baby can comfortably breast feed. Any shots we do with a bare bum, we try and do quickly so there aren’t any accidents. In these shots, we just rolled down the nappy, aka diaper, to show a little bum, but not have baby completely exposed just in case there were to be an accident.

Things to take into consideration when scheduling a portrait session with your baby.

When is their feeding time?

When is their witching hour?

When do they normally sleep?

Babies are more flexible and bendy when they are in their first few months. Once your child starts getting a little older, heavier, and more alert, it becomes more difficult to move them around without them wanting to jump out of your arms!

Make sure to bring a few items that they love to play with so we’re able to shake behind the camera to get their attention.

With studio lighting, babies tend to fuss or get a little wide-eyed. We don’t want to flash the lights too fast as this will easily upset him or her. Any ways we can prepare together ahead of time will make it easier on everyone!

Looking to freeze their cuteness in time? Work with our team to organize a session special for you and your new little human. Time moves quickly and your child won’t wait on you.

Breast Cancer Survivor Giveaway

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I am gifting one woman this October 2018 with a makeover, gown styling, and photo session with my team for the day at my studio.

As a woman, and knowing women who have battled breast cancer, I see the struggle with the scars and the disconnection from her body that often makes women feel incomplete. This session will bring joy, help listen to the pain, and give her permission to see that the person who is hurting is allowed to feel powerful even in the most powerless of times. And if you are that person who is surviving yourself know that you ARE beautiful and you are allowed to feel beautiful always.

Please read below to learn how to nominate someone you know that is a survivor or currently battling with breast cancer.

Please send an email through our bookings link below and mark “gifter” for the subject. In the “descriptions of service” box, please state who you’re nominating (first and last name), why you’re nominating them, and if they are able to come to the studio in Washington, D.C. Their name will be chosen at random through a raffle system online. The deadline for submission is October 29th and then name will be announced online by October 31st.

You do not need to be located in Washington, D.C., but whomever you nominate needs to find transportation to the studio.

Together we will choose two gowns to work with for the shoot. She will get to design her look with some guidance. We want her to feel like royalty for the day!

This portrait session, consultation, and makeover is complimentary to the model and they’ll be offered a $100 voucher to use towards the purchase of prints. There is NO obligation to purchase and they can request a reveal of their portraits privately at no cost. They will be gifted a 7x10 matted print of the image chosen from that gallery.
